A note from the owners: Chapel Street started with an idea: bring Melbourne’s café culture to Chicago. That idea brought Chapel Street to life – the aim of delivering our guests seriously good coffee, generous food and hospitality, and a quiet sophistication that brings a little inspiration to every day.
Coffee as Culture
Melbourne’s coffee obsession is almost as old as the city itself. We had grand coffee palaces in the 1880s, and post-war Italian immigration turned our espresso bars into institutions in the 1950s. That culture hit Melbourne hard, and stuck.
More Than Coffee
Coffee may be where the story starts - but wait, there’s more! Come in for the Aussie “big breakfast”, stay awhile for a long lunch. Come back for a pint and chicken parma at our bar, a dinner with friends, or a bottle of Australian wine you probably won’t find on any other list in Chicago. We’re a cafe, a restaurant and a bar – an all-day cafe, if you will.
Why Chapel Street? Glad you asked.
We’re named after Chapel Street in Melbourne, the famous stretch of roadway that runs through South Yarra, Prahran and Windsor. It’s packed with cafes, restaurants, bars, shops, nightclubs, and more than just a little spicy personality. Look it up. My grandfather owned a bakery on Chapel Street, I played Pac-Man at the arcade as a kid on Chapel Street. What a place. It feels about right to me. A little Melbourne, just off the Magnificent Mile, Chicago.
